Marriage

"MARRIAGE BETWEEN MAN AND WOMAN IS ESSENTIAL TO HIS ETERNAL PLAN"(The Church, 1995).

Together Forever

"From the beginning of time, marital companionship of husband and wife has been fundamental to our Heavenly Father’s great plan of happiness" (Wirthlin, 1997). Just like Adam and Eve were married by Heavenly Father for eternity, marriages are intended to last forever, not just for our mortal lives. Through the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the Earth today, eternal marriages are performed in holy temples by those who hold the priesthood sealing power.  Through faithfulness to this covenant, couples can have a fulness of joy and live together with their families throughout eternity.

Oneness and Unity

"Because of their distinctive temperaments and capacities, males and females each bring to a marriage relationship unique perspectives and experiences. The man and the woman contribute differently but equally to a oneness and a unity that can be achieved in no other way. The man completes and perfects the woman and the woman completes and perfects the man as they learn from and mutually strengthen and bless each other. 'Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord' (1 Corinthians 11:11).  As a husband and wife are each drawn to the Lord, as they learn to serve and cherish one another, as they share life experiences and grow together and become one, and as they are blessed through the uniting of their distinctive natures, they begin to realize the fulfillment that our Heavenly Father desires for His children."

A Loving Home for Children

"By divine design, both a man and a woman are needed to bring children into mortality and to provide the best setting for the rearing and nurturing of children.  Marriage between a man and a woman is the authorized channel through which premortal spirits enter mortality. A home with a loving and loyal husband and wife is   the supreme setting in which children can be reared in love and righteousness and in which the spiritual and physical needs of children can be met. Just as the unique characteristics of both males and females contribute to the completeness of a marriage relationship, so those same characteristics are vital to the rearing, nurturing, and teaching of children" (Bednar, 2006).

The Marriage Covenant

What are the covenants in marriage?

“The sweet companionship of eternal marriage is one of the greatest blessings God has granted to His children.  Certainly, the many years I have shared with my beautiful companion have brought me the deepest joys of my life" (Wirthlin, 1997).
